Ah, German cinema in the nineties, Tom Tykwer’s overated film Run Lola Run, scat porn, and this dykish dabble into the WIP genre. Inmates Luna (Jasmin Tabatabai), serving time for robbery; Angel (Nicolette Krebitz), in prison for fraud; and Marie (Jutta Hoffmann), locked up for murder; need a drummer in order to jailhouse rock. The answer to their musical melancholy is new fish Emma (Katja Riemann), who shot a jazz creep in self defence. These cheesehead rockers get an opportunity to play at a policeman’s ball, and you guessed it, make a ditch for freedom. Once on the run, the band gains fame and every music industry cliche that can be packed into 110 painful minutes. Taking way to many cues from Thelma and Louise and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls one gets the impression that director Garnier had the impression that this was her big breakout project. Yeah, it looks good but so do tofu dumplings. Sorry, this cinematic dim sum doesn’t make the buffet.
