ALSO SEE HOTEL PARADISE “This is a jail. Not a music lovers paradise,” demands the warden in this Italian/Spanish co-production. You have to hand it to Edward Mueller. He may not be big on plot, but he knows how to throw in a plethora of sex and violence. Within the first 10 minutes of this steamy jungle flick, he tosses up a brutal rape, catfight, and a sex scene involving an x-rated sword swallow! The girls in this film are slightly bruised up and bug bitten, but they are all curvaceous sweaty Italian gals. This film should of been called Bushmaster, because there is a naked muff or snake attack every 15 minutes! The minimalist plot (you won’t care) involves a new fish and a new warden being thrown into some sadistic hellhole. The germaphobe warden digs his reign of girl torture terror, and the the newbie inmate seems to enjoy the lesbo lickings of her cellmates. Yet all is not happy in this tropical lockdown.
The girls are being forced to clear a tract of jungle at a brisk pace on a diet consisting of snake meat. When the reckless alcoholic doctor slurs something about reformation, the warden quips, “Snake meat gives the prisoners zip!” The gals eventually tire of being tortured and raped, and the doc gets tired off his classical records being used during the torture. The group devises a scheme involving the chicks contracting a fake plague, so they can be sent away to keep the disease from spreading. The doc can’t help himself, and kills the warden before their departure, so it becomes a run through the rain forest with the prison guards hot on their tail. Did I mention sex? The Wizard Video version I saw was borderline pornographic. The shots seemed to cut just as a glimpse of labia or standard porn action was starting. I would bet that somewhere there is a hard X version of this film floating around.
The Wizard version also contains tons of torture, lots of jungle peril, and some great shotgun blast to the gullet. I have yet to see the remastered Troma version that Amazon.com is selling through this site, but I will be sure to report on it's contents once I get my grubby paws on it. Like most of the successful Fillipino jail flicks, Esape uses the environment outside of the prison as an additional antagonist full of leeches, quicksand, and tons of thrill kill snakes. With excellent bad dialogue, authentic locations, and nasty Ajita Wilson (Sadomania) biting the head off a viper, this is a sure bet for a good WIP experience.Escape was followed by a sequel called Hotel Paradise & footage was also used in Savage Island.
