This big budget con on death row flick centers on the spoiled lawyer Rick Hayes played by Morrow. Hayes is given a position with the Florida appeals department. Peter Gallagher, sporting one of the worst Southern accents since Gone With the Wind, plays his older brother who is in league with the Governor's political machine. Morrow's first case is Death Row inmate Cindy Liggett (Stone), and as could be expected he runs hurdles for her stay of execution. Stone is quite good as the changed con, and the moments between her and Morrow are semi convincing. The moments leading up to her execution had me wide eyed, but lookout here comes the Hollywood convention.
Yeah, after a decent build up, the poop got to deep in the pants for this production. What had built up as a pretty engaging story decided to go for the boo hoo Dead Poets Society type string pulling antics. The best scene in Last Dance involves the meeting between Hayes and death row con Reese, played by an uncredited Charles S. Dutton. Reese is also trying to get a stay of execution. while on death row he has managed to earn a degree from Harvard, and publish a book that made the New York times bestseller list. His character states that he will be the one to get a stay of execution because he has rehabilitated and marketed himself. Reese is right, his story is much more interesting than everyone else in this film, and it's a shame that his story isn't more developed.
Last dance goes to show that a stylistic Andrew Wyeth opening, bad accents, Helicopter shots, an Indian 2nd unit, blatant heart string pulling, and a fully clothed Stone doesn't make for good, or insightful WIP viewing. The closing shot of this film caused me to kick the television.
